This father and son team share the love of all things wood and are The Wood Calling creators and designers.
Hale
Hale enjoys creating object and is open to new challenges. The son in the creative team, Hale, has been woodworking with his father, Sonny, starting as a young boy in elementary school.
Diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and Intellectual Disabilities, Hale was graduated in 2022 from his local school district's REACH Program (Reay for Employment and to Assist as Community Helpers) following high school graduation. Hale has a part time job at an area plant nursery as well as a part time job at as a greeter for a AAA baseball team. Active in The Arc of Fort Bend County, Hale participates in Special Olympics sports and Social Rec. Hale continues playing baseball with a Little League Challenger team. Any game or sport which involves the use of a ball, count Hale in! Hale and Sonny spend their time outside of the workshop enjoying bike rides and photography. Hale has a great photographic eye thanks to his great teacher, Sonny.
Hale has had many amazing opportunities in life. He has been in a national NBA AllStar television ad, interviewed for PBS local news and on a local news tv story. In 2015, Hale had the once in a lifetime opportunity of playing in the Little League World Series Challenger Exhibition game.
Hale is always designing and creating new hand crafted wooden signs he wants to build and create for The Wood Calling.
sonny
Sonny is the father in this father and son duo. He has a lifelong interest in creating objects out of a simple pieces of Southern Yellow Pine wood.
Growing up in Arkansas, Sonny spent his time outdoors exploring, hunting and learning about nature in the pine forest behind his home. As one of his town’s main industries was logging and paper mills, Sonny was intrigued by the Southern Yellow Pine tress and the surrounding forests he explored.
Starting in his teens, Sonny taught himself how to build from his college dorm room bunk beds to train sets where the paint never dried!
Sonny has taught Hale how to work with his hands and the two design and create objects out of wood. Sonny has adapted woodworking processes and tools to allow Hale to be creative.
A retired Oil and Gas service industry executive, Sonny serves on several Boards of Directors including a financial instruction, a Little League Challenger league as well as a guardianship service.
Sonny is a talented photographer who photographs a local AAA baseball team and donates his photography skills to his area Special Olympics organization, the Little League Challenger team as well as area high schools.
